Research Focus
My post-graduate study was at the Royal College of Art. My doctoral thesis, Memories Made in Seeing: Film as Memory, Memory as Film, considered how films represent memories and, in turn, become memories themselves, and how this can inform our understanding of the importance of remembrance and its narrativized depiction. This is an ongoing interest.
My practice – as an artist, curator, and writer – explores connected interests: curatorially I investigate a ‘discursive’ methodology with accompanying exhibition strategies; my films and installations consider ‘sense of place’.
I co-curate Contact which is an artist-run organisation that presents screenings, exhibitions, and festivals. These events are a mode of research by practice, which brings together practical and theoretical concerns. The most recent project is Film Talks: 15 Conversations on Experimental Cinema, which shows peer-to-peer interaction can offer unique insight; the screening series Film Talks: Live developed from this project.
Currently, I am developing a new project, For All of London: The Contemporary City in Artists’ Films, a book and screening series. Through ten key artist film and experimental films, and interviews with their creators, the city’s contemporary boom – from Thatcherite redevelopment to the 2012 Olympics – will be re-examined. This project will constitute a unique exploration of these times through the work it inspired. It also aims to introduce this work and its themes to new audiences.
