Sarah Goy
After gaining my MA in Animation Production (2021) I was invited to be an Artist in Residence at the newly opened AUB Innovation Studio. My area of interest is how Art and Science can come together and be used to benefit health and wellbeing, with a particular interest in Neurology which stems from living with my own Neuro-divergence caused by Epilepsy.
Initially, I worked on a live pilot project with Animation Senior Lecturer Paul Hilton, a collaboration between AUB and the NHS to produce a medical explainer video with a difference. This took a more holistic approach to explaining the facts of a procedure, bringing together the hand-made and the digital, colour and emotions, and tapping into how visual imagery engages our subconscious, therefore not just informing, but also attempting to create a sense of calm.
I also worked on a 12-week multi-disciplinary group workshop, led by Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professor Eric Dyer (University of Maryland, Baltimore County). We explored the old art forms of the Zoetrope and Phenakistascope and their potential use beyond pure novelty. I was interested in Auras and how to represent the invisible, and through learning new skills and playful experimentation I created a hand-painted artwork that was part of the group exhibition held in the Innovation Studio. The project concluded with a one-day Symposium where we shared our experiences with the audience, and visiting external speakers presented their own innovative animation research.
I’m now exploring interdisciplinary PhD opportunities within the field of Art, Neurology and Communication and due to be working on further NHS projects.
